Dachshunds feel the cold. Short legs keep their bellies close to cold, wet ground, and smooth-coated doxies have very little insulation. Once you know your dog needs a layer, the next question is which kind. Sweaters and coats do different jobs.

Sweaters: everyday warmth
A knit sweater is a soft, stretchy layer that traps body heat. It's ideal for cool, dry days, chilly mornings and cold evenings indoors, especially for smooth-coated doxies, puppies and seniors. Sweaters are comfortable and easy to wash. Their weakness is wet and wind: a soaked knit loses most of its warmth.
Coats: weather protection
A padded or windproof coat adds a protective outer layer for cold, windy or damp days and longer winter walks. It blocks the wind and holds warmth even in poor weather. On the coldest days, some owners layer a thin sweater underneath.
Getting the fit right on a long body
Most dog clothes are cut for "average" proportions, so they gape at the chest or stop halfway along a dachshund's back. Look for:
- Longer body length covering the back and most of the belly
- A snug, not tight, chest, with room for two fingers
- Room around the legs, so it doesn't rub the armpits
- A cut that clears the toilet area, especially for boys
- Easy on and off, without twisting their front legs
Measure back length (base of neck to base of tail), chest and neck, and compare with the size chart. Wearing a harness? Put the layer on first, then the harness on top.
Shivering, lifting paws off the ground, a hunched posture or tucked tail, refusing to walk, or burrowing more than usual. Add a layer or head home.

Can my dachshund wear a sweater all day?
In a cold house, yes, as long as it isn't tight and they aren't overheating. Take it off at bedtime and check the armpits occasionally for rubbing.
Do long-haired dachshunds need a coat?
They're better insulated than smooth doxies but still benefit from a coat in cold, wet or windy weather, as their feathered bellies collect snow and mud.
My dachshund hates wearing clothes. What can I do?
Go slowly: let them sniff it, reward them, put it on for a few seconds, and build up. Pair it with good things like walks and treats.
