Dachshund Weight Guide: How Much Should a Dachshund Weigh?

Keeping a dachshund at a healthy weight is one of the most useful things you can do for them. Extra kilos put more load on a long spine that's already prone to disc problems, and on short legs and joints.

The short version
  • Miniatures: 11 lb (about 5 kg) and under. Standards: 16 to 32 lb (about 7 to 14.5 kg).
  • Body shape matters more than the number on the scale.
  • You should feel ribs easily and see a waist from above.
  • Weigh food, count treats, and talk to your vet before a diet.

Healthy weight ranges

The American Kennel Club breed standard gives these adult ranges:

Size Pounds Kilograms
Miniature 11 lb and under About 5 kg and under
Standard 16 to 32 lb About 7 to 14.5 kg

Dogs in between are often called "tweenies", which is very common and perfectly healthy. Other kennel clubs use slightly different standards, so treat these as a guide rather than a target.

How to check body condition at home

  1. Feel the ribs. Run your hands along their sides. The ribs should be easy to feel under a thin layer of fat, like the back of your hand. If you have to press hard, they're carrying extra weight.
  2. Look from above. You should see a visible waist behind the ribs, a gentle hourglass rather than a straight tube.
  3. Look from the side. The belly should tuck up behind the ribcage, not hang level with the chest.

Dachshunds naturally have a deep chest, so a low chest is normal. It's the belly behind it that should rise.

Why it matters so much

Dachshunds are the breed most commonly affected by IVDD, and veterinary research has linked higher body condition to a greater risk of disc problems. Extra weight also makes recovery harder. More in our IVDD prevention guide.

Helping an overweight dachshund slim down

  • Talk to your vet first. They can set a target weight and rule out medical causes like hypothyroidism.
  • Weigh the food. Use kitchen scales, not a scoop.
  • Count every treat. Keep treats to about 10% of daily calories. Try carrot, green beans or part of their regular food.
  • No table scraps. A small bite for us is a big meal for them.
  • Add activity gradually. An extra short walk beats one very long one. See how much exercise a dachshund needs.
  • Weigh in regularly, aiming for slow, steady loss.

Common questions

Is my dachshund a miniature or a standard?

Under the AKC standard it comes down to adult weight: 11 lb (about 5 kg) and under is miniature, 16 to 32 lb is standard. Many pet dachshunds sit in between. More in miniature vs standard.

At what age is a dachshund fully grown?

Most reach adult height at around 8 to 12 months and keep filling out until around 12 to 18 months.

My dachshund looks thin. Is that bad?

If you can see the ribs, hip bones and spine clearly from a distance, they may be underweight. Check with your vet, as unexplained weight loss can have a medical cause.
