Dachshunds come in two official sizes, miniature and standard, plus plenty of lovable dogs in between. Beyond size, the differences are smaller than you might think, but they're worth knowing before you choose a puppy or buy gear.

Some kennel clubs, such as the FCI in Europe, classify dachshunds by chest circumference rather than weight, and also recognise a smaller "rabbit" size.

Temperament
Both sizes share the classic dachshund personality: brave, clever, loyal, playful and a bit stubborn. Some owners find miniatures a touch more sensitive and standards a little more laid-back, but personality, breeding and socialisation matter far more than size.
Exercise

Health

Living space and families
Both adapt well to apartments with enough exercise. The bigger factor is often stairs: if you live up several flights, you'll be carrying your dog, which is easier with a mini (here's how to lift them safely). Weight varies so much that you should always size gear by measurement rather than by "mini" or "standard".

Is a miniature dachshund healthier than a standard?
Neither is clearly healthier overall. Both share the breed's back risk. Choose a responsible breeder who health-tests, whichever size you pick.
How can I tell what size my puppy will be?
The parents' adult weights are the best guide. Your vet can estimate adult size as your puppy grows.
Do miniature dachshunds live longer?
Smaller dogs tend to live slightly longer on average, and dachshunds of both sizes commonly live into their teens.
