Dachshund Clothes Size Guide: How to Measure for Sweaters, Vests and Coats

Most dog clothes are cut for a dog that's roughly as long as it is tall. A dachshund is twice as long as it is tall, with a deep chest and a tiny neck, so "small" from a generic brand can be short in the back, tight across the chest and baggy everywhere else. Measuring takes two minutes and saves a lot of returns.

The short version
  • Measure three things: chest (widest point), neck (base) and back length (neck to tail).
  • For a dachshund, the chest measurement matters most. Size by that first.
  • Between sizes? Go up. A slightly roomy layer is comfortable; a tight one rubs.
  • Re-measure puppies every month, and any adult after a change in weight.

Why dachshunds are hard to dress

Dog clothing sizes are usually based on an "average" body: a medium-length back, a moderate chest and legs in proportion. Dachshunds break all three rules. Their back is long, their chest is deep and barrel-shaped, and their legs are short, which means the leg holes on a standard sweater often sit too far forward and the hem stops halfway down the back.

The fix isn't a bigger size. It's measuring your own dog and comparing the numbers with each product's chart, because every brand, and often every product, is cut differently.

What you'll need

  • A soft sewing tape measure. No tape? Use string and lay it against a ruler.
  • Your dog standing on all four legs on a level surface.
  • Treats, and ideally a second person to hold them at nose height.

The three measurements

  1. Chest. Wrap the tape around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Keep it snug but not tight, with the tape flat against the fur. On a dachshund this is the number that decides the size.
  2. Neck. Measure around the base of the neck, where a collar would sit. Clothes with a fixed neck opening need this number to be right; snap-front or open-back styles are more forgiving.
  3. Back length. Measure along the spine from the base of the neck (where the collar sits) to the base of the tail. Most dachshund-specific clothes are cut longer here than generic brands.

Write all three down, and measure twice. Wriggly doxies rarely give the same number twice, so use the larger reading.

Measuring a puppy

Puppies grow fast and unevenly. Measure monthly until they're fully grown, and buy layers with some adjustability (snap buttons or stretchy knit) rather than fitted pieces they'll outgrow in weeks.

How to read a size chart

Start with the chest. Find the size whose chest range includes your dog's number, then check the back length and neck for that size. If the chest fits but the back is short, that product isn't cut for a dachshund, whatever the size label says. If two of the three measurements fall into different sizes, choose the size that fits the chest and check the product's notes on fit.

Fleece-Lined Vest

The vest is sized by chest, neck and back length. It opens fully and fastens with snap buttons along the back, so there's no pulling it over the head, and the fit runs slightly snug, so go up a size if you're between two.

Size Chest Neck Back
S 32 cm (12.5 in) 23 cm (9 in) 20 cm (7.8 in)
M 37 cm (14.4 in) 26 cm (10.1 in) 25 cm (9.8 in)
L 42 cm (16.4 in) 29 cm (11.3 in) 30 cm (11.7 in)
XL 47 cm (18.3 in) 32 cm (12.5 in) 35 cm (13.7 in)
XXL 52 cm (20.3 in) 35 cm (13.7 in) 40 cm (15.6 in)

Measurements can vary by 1 to 3 cm between pieces, which is another reason to size up when you're close to the top of a range.

Knit Sweaters

Our sweaters are a stretchy knit, so they're sized by weight rather than exact centimetres: Small for 3.5 to 5 kg, Medium for 5 to 7 kg and Large for 6.5 to 8.5 kg. That covers most miniatures and smaller standards. If your dachshund is heavier than 8.5 kg, the vest's larger sizes will fit better than a stretched sweater.

Harness

The harness uses neck and chest measurements plus weight, and has its own chart. See the harness size guide. If you plan to wear a layer under the harness, measure with the layer on, or loosen the straps and redo the two-finger check.

Checking the fit once it's on

  • You can slide two flat fingers under the neck opening and the chest.
  • Leg holes don't rub behind the front legs when your dog walks.
  • The hem clears the toilet area, especially for boys.
  • It doesn't ride up the back or twist when they sniff and trot.
  • Your dog moves normally. A doxie that freezes or walks stiffly is telling you something is tight.

Walk them around the house for ten minutes, then check the armpits and neck for pink or flattened fur.

Common sizing mistakes

  • Measuring over a coat or sweater. Measure against the fur and allow for layers separately.
  • Sizing by breed label. "Mini" and "standard" are weight categories, not clothing sizes. Two minis can differ by 2 kg.
  • Pulling the tape tight. The tape should sit flat, not squash the coat.
  • Measuring a sitting dog. Sitting widens the chest and shortens the back.
  • Ignoring back length. A sweater that fits the chest but stops mid-back leaves the coldest part of a dachshund uncovered.

Common questions

What size clothes does a miniature dachshund wear?

Most adult miniatures measure a chest of roughly 35 to 42 cm, which lands in M or L for our vest and Small to Medium for our sweaters. Always go by your tape measure, not the label.

What size clothes does a standard dachshund wear?

Standards usually measure a chest of 42 to 52 cm, which is L to XXL in the vest. Our sweaters currently run to 8.5 kg, so larger standards are better in the vest.

Should dog clothes be tight or loose?

Snug but not tight. Two fingers should fit under the neck and chest, and your dog should be able to walk, sit, lie down and toilet normally.

Can my dachshund wear clothes under a harness?

Yes. Put the layer on first, the harness over the top, then loosen the harness straps slightly and redo the two-finger check.
